Sig Sauer has a new cannon in the lineup, the P320-XTEN Endure chambered in 10mm. As a hunter in the center of bear country, I’ve been anxiously waiting to test this little power-packed beauty. Alright, it isn’t “literally” a cannon, but ever since realizing what the 10mm is capable of two decades ago, I have always called it a little “hand cannon,” and I think most would agree with the metaphor considering its power is only trumped by a .44 Magnum or larger. But listen, I’ve got 15 rounds in the magazine so the .44 Magnum can take a back seat on this one. Considering a large percentage of gun manufacturers make these in an M1911, it is exciting to see Sig Sauer come out with a striker-fired platform 10mm that not only looks like a John Wick 3 movie prop but also shoots like a dream.
Long Live The 10mm Auto
The 10mm Auto has been around since 1983 and was adopted by the FBI in 1989 when the 9mm just wasn’t cutting it during gun fights. Some will compare the 10mm Auto to a .357 Magnum or a snappier .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol), but I’ll just stick to some facts.
Sig Sauer’s 180-grain Elite Ball Ammo comes out of the muzzle at 1,250 fps (feet per second) with 624 ft-lbs. of energy and it is not hard to find off-the-shelf ammo even hotter than that. There are countless videos and stories of the 10mm Auto effectively taking on big, dangerous game all over the world. Although recoil is a side effect of power, I can assure you the Sig Sauer P320-XTEN Endure is designed to allow the shooter to have complete control of this hard-hitting round and use it in extreme weather conditions.
Dynamic Features
The P320 XTEN Endure can be recognized right away by its topographic pattern Cerakote finish on the slide, which gives it a high-end appearance and added protection against extreme elements. It comes optics-ready in the Pro footprint for shooters (like me) who prefer reflex sights. Or you can stick with the X-Ray3 Day/Night iron sights for those who like the traditional look. The P320-XTEN Endure is a full-size pistol with a 5-inch bull barrel for exceptional accuracy.
The magazine holds 15 rounds for added coverage against stubborn critters. The X-Series Flat Trigger is a sleek and modern design that breaks over right where you want it. In addition, the P320-XTEN Endure comes with an all-new aggressive LXG laser stippling in the grip that adds the finishing touch to a sexy-looking, striker-fired beast.
Range Performance Results
Don’t let the looks fool you. The Sig Sauer P320-XTEN Endure doesn’t just look like a work of art that should stay inside a glass case or be kept safely in the vault—this thing is meant to run! Not only does it shoot well, but Sig Sauer built it as an adventure gun capable of handling some of the world's most brutal climates thanks to the new Custom Works Cerakote finish.
We shot the P320-XTEN Endure on our steel target course for quite some time expecting to eventually feel the fatigue of the heavier recoil felt by the 10mm round. The 10mm is no joke when it comes to hard-hitting stopping power, but the P320-XTEN Endure is so comfortable to shoot we just couldn’t put it down.
Recoil & Target Acquisition
The ability to control the recoil is truly a testament to Sig's ergonomic design which can be found in the entire Sig Sauer P320 line. Combine the ergonomics with the aggressive LXG stippling on the grip and the P320-XTEN Endure had a similar feel to the P320 AXG Legion. Now when running the XTEN Endure with the Romeo-X Pro reflex sight, it becomes almost comical how easy it is to get back on target after each shot.
As the 180-grain lead rounds hit the steel target in tightly grouped shots, I couldn't help but feel sorry for any black bear that might charge at it. I thought to myself, "The poor thing wouldn't stand a chance." We even compared the recoil of the 10mm rounds to that of a full-size Sig Sauer M17 chambered in 9mm, and the recoil was apparent but slight, whereas the 10mm rounds against the steel target were noticeably more violent.
Final Thoughts
For a powerful round like the 10mm, it was an absolute pleasure to shoot the Sig Sauer P320-XTEN Endure with such finesse and comfort. The all-terrain rugged build with the artistic touch of the Custom Works topographic pattern on the slide along with the aggressive look of the LXG laser stippling is one of those unicorns that don’t come around often; especially when you consider the price. I highly recommend shooting the P320-XTEN Endure to see just how manageable it is to wield a caliber that sits just shy of the .44 Magnum. You’ll certainly be confident in any situation you might find yourself in with P320-XTEN Endure at your side. For more information, visit sigsauer.com.
